Kampo is a japanese  traditional herbal medicine.

Kampo system based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine, which was introduced in Japan in the 4th century AD.

Chinese Medicine has already been practiced widely in Japan in the 6th century in acupuncture, moxibation and herbal medicine.

Until the 9th century, Kampo medicine books written only in Japanese but there was attempt to combine with Buddhist philosophy.

Over the years there were several traditional schools involved in Japan, some more practical and some more theoretical. The "Kohoha" movement that became stronger in the 16th century, wanted to revive the chinese scripts but still emphasized the practice and observation of the Japanese perspective.

In the 16th century, therapists started to become more and more interested in western medicine through Dutch trading stations access that Japan traded with.

In 1876 the Japanese government made the study of Western medicine compulsory for physicians. However, it did not forbid Kampo, so many doctors still practised it. The second half of the 20th century saw a Kampo revival. Most modern Japanese doctors have studied biomedicine, but they can also prescribed traditional treatments and herbs.

In 1976, public insurance companies started to fund Kampo formulas. That way, traditional formulas became cheaper and common across the country. Also, it gave a big boost to research on classical formulas context of Western diseases.
